TWISTS AND TURNS

Before Vahid Halihodzic was appointed as the coach of Algeria, he was in charge of Ivory Coast where he enjoyed a fairly successful campaign with the team of Didier Drogba as they went through a 2 year unbeaten run in qualifiers and reached the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations but things took huge twist when playing against Algeria in the quarter finals stages of this competition, they lost in extra time.

This was a huge disappointment for Ivory Coast as they were favorites on going all the way and lifting the trophy. This defeat ultimately led to Halihodzic being sacked.

3 years later and the Bosnian manager became the man in charge to lead Algeria through the 2014 World Cup but this will be one of his hardest tasks to accomplish in his coaching career.

Algeria has never been able to reach the quarterfinals stages of any World Cup and Halihodzic stated that the main reason on why this has never been done is because of the ‘’narcissistic’’ footballers.

“The individual comes first in Africa and the team second. Team spirit is lacking and this makes it impossible to create winners’’. Halihodzic stated.

Some of the highlights of Halihodzic’s coaching career was a few years back when he lifted the Coupe de France trophy with PSG and in 1997 when he secured the CAF Champions League with Raja Casablanca however if the Bosnian manager is even able to escape the group stages of the 2014 World Cup with Algeria, it will be a huge accomplishment considering that it’s something that the nation has never managed on doing.
